Woodra Enterprises Inc. was founded in 1963, Olongapo City, Philippines. The US Navy base at Subic Bay was providing housing for hundreds of sailors, Marines and Filipino support workers, who needed furniture. The opportunity to fill a nitch by providing quality, long-lasting furniture and, in doing so, was able to provide employment and livelihood for many of their countrymen.


Hawaii had always been an important market for furniture from the Philippines, especially furniture made of rattan, which is extremely strong, long-lasting, and impervious to hazards of the tropics. Rattan with solid wood has a beauty that expresses itself. These furniture pieces were produced during the 40’s to the 60’s. The beauty and structural integrity of the hand-carved Hawaiian Koa furniture which was ubiquitous in the 30's, 40's and 50's. By the early 90's such pieces had become expensive and hard to find, due to the increasing scarcity of both Koa wood and skilled artisans who could shape it into furniture.


Woodra Enterprises Inc. began building elegant hand carved Hawaiian-themed furniture in Narra wood (a member of the acacia family which looks almost exactly like Hawaiian Koa), as well as the beautiful Philippine mahogany. Cushions were covered in rugged bark cloth in lovely tropical prints, provided by a fabric company on Oahu.
